SHORT SUMMARY

Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare

Two best friends, Proteus and Valentine, travel to the city of Milan, where they both fall in love with a beautiful girl called Silvia. Silvia is in love with Valentine, but Proteus pursues her despite the fact that he has a girlfriend at home. After an apology, both Proteus and Valentine reconcile, Proteus loves his girlfriend again, and both couples marry.

DETAILED SUMMARY

Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare

Act I

The two young friends, Valentine and Proteus, bid farewell to each other as Valentine resolves to travel. Proteus won't leave Verona, where his girlfriend Julia lives. Meanwhile, Julia's maid, Lucetta, provides her with a letter from Proteus. Julia cherishes it despite her outward displays of recklessness for love.

Act II

Later, Proteus' father, Antonio, sends his son to Milan, much to Julia's grief. Proteus and Julia part with words of love for each other. Proteus is joined by his servant Lance and Lance's dog Crabb. While at the Duke's court, Proteus learns that his friend Valentine has fallen in love with the Duke's daughter, Silvia. Speed, Valentine's fast-paced page, helps Valentine realise that his love is reciprocated. Proteus, who had faithfully exchanged rings and vows with Julia before leaving Verona, sees Sylvia and immediately switches his allegiance.

Act III

As the duke plans to marry Silvia to the foolish Thurio, Valentine decides to elope with her. However, the envious Proteus reveals Valentine's plot to the Duke, and Valentine is discovered while carrying a rope ladder. Valentine is banished for his conspiracy and leaves court with Speed as his partner. In his absence, Proteus woos Silvia, but she disdains his speeches and music, urging him to remember Julia. In contrast to all this courtly love, Lance ponders the merits and demerits of the cowgirl he wishes to marry.

Act IV

In Verona, Lucetta helps Julia disguise herself as a pageboy. She disguises herself as Sebastian in order to find Proteus. Unrecognized in Milan, she actually seeks out Proteus, and he sends her to collect the portrait promised by Silvia. Meanwhile, Silvia remains devoted to her memory of Valentine. Silvia persuades a knight called Sir Eglamour to accompany her in search of Valentine in Mantua.

Act V

The exiled Valentine is captured by a band of elite outlaws, who make him their captain. Silvia is even captured by the outlaws, while Sir Eglamour escapes. The Duke and Thurio take Proteus (after Julia and Sebastian) in search of Silvia. When they find her with the outlaws, Proteus saves her. Proteus tries to force himself on her, despite Silvia's protests, but is stopped by Valentine, the leader of the outlaws.

Julia overhears the youths' argument and their eventual reconciliation. Mistaking Valentine's apparent desire to give Silvia to Proteus, Julia faints in front of them. Proteus recognises the ring that he gave to Julia. She reveals her identity, and Proteus' love for Julia is rekindled. The outlaws arrive there with their captives, Duke and Thurio. In response to Valentin's threats, Thurio denies Silvia. Valentin's affection for Silvia is rewarded with the Duke's approval. Two pairs of lovers agree to share the wedding day. The play ends as the Duke grants the outlaw a free pardon at Valentine's request.
