DETAILED SUMMARY
As You Like It by William Shakespeare
Act I
Orlando, the youngest son of the recently deceased Sir Roland de Boys, is mistreated by his eldest brother, Oliver. Being bitter and angry, Orlando challenges the court wrestler, Charles, to a brawl. When Oliver learns about the fight, he asks Charles to injure Orlando if possible.
Duke Frederick has recently removed his brother, Duke Senior, as head of the court. But he lets Rosalind, the senior's daughter, stay, and she and Celia, the new duke's daughter, watch the wrestling contest. During the match, Rosalind falls in love with Orlando, who defeats Charles. Rosalind provides Orlando with a chain to wear. In turn, he is overcome with love.
Act II
Shortly afterwards, Orlando is warned of his brother's plot against him and takes refuge in the Forest of Arden. At the same time, and seemingly for no reason, Duke Frederick banishes Rosalind. She decides to take refuge with Celia in the Forest of Arden. Both of them disguise themselves: Rosalind as the young man Ganymede, and Celia as her shepherdess sister Aliena. Touchstone, the court fool, also goes with them.
Act III
In the Forest of Arden, the tired cousins happen upon Silvius, a loving shepherd. Silvius was in the act of announcing his feelings for Phoebe, a scornful shepherdess. Ganymede buys the lease for the property of an old shepherd who requires someone to manage his estate. Both Ganymede and Aliena set up shop in the woods. Not far away and unknown to the newcomers, Duke Senior is living a simple, outlandish life with his fellow exiled courtiers and hunters. Their fun is interrupted by the arrival of Orlando, who seeks sustenance for himself and his servant. The two men are greeted by the outlaw courtiers.
Both Ganymede and Aliena find verses addressed by Orlando to Rosalind hung on the forest branches. Ganymede finds Orlando and offers Orlando a cure for his love. To do this, Orlando would woo Ganymede as if he were Rosalind (even though "she" is actually Rosalind). Orlando agrees and visits Ganymede/Rosalind every day for his lessons. Meanwhile, the shepherdess Phoebe has fallen in love with Ganymede, while the shepherd Silvius is still pursuing her. Furthermore, Touchstone, the court fool, has struck Audrey, a country girl, with his courtly manners. Audrey leaves her young boyfriend, William, for him.
Act IV
When Duke Frederick hears that Orlando has disappeared along with Rosalind and Celia, he orders Oliver to go into the woods to search for his brother. In the woods, Orlando saves Oliver's life, injuring his arm in the process. Oliver meets Ganymede and Aliena in the woods and tells them the news. Rosalind (disguised as Ganymede) is overcome by her feelings for Orlando. Celia (disguised as Aliena) and Oliver quickly fall in love with each other. Rosalind decides it is time to end her game with Orlando and settles on a plan in which everyone will marry.
Act V
As Ganymede, Rosalind also promises Phoebe that they will marry Celia to Oliver, Touchstone to Audrey, and Orlando to Rosalind. She makes Phoebe promise that if they do not marry for some reason, Phoebe will marry Silvius instead.
On the day of the wedding, and with the help of Lord Hyman, Rosalind reappears in her lady's clothes. Duke Senior gives her to Orlando, while Phoebe accepts Silvius. Next, Orlando's other older brother returns from college with news that Celia's father, Duke Frederick, has left the court to become a monk. Thus, everyone is happy (except perhaps Phoebe, who marries someone she doesn't love, and Silvius, who marries someone who doesn't love her). The play ends with a joyous dance to celebrate the four weddings.
