DETAILED SUMMARY

The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare

Act I

The play "The Taming of the Shrew" begins with a group of hunting nobles leading a drunken tinkerer named Christopher Sly into believing he is a lord. The nobles provide Sly with a young page as his supposed wife. They entertain him with a play by a troupe of travelling actors at his house.

Student Lucentio arrives in Padua to pursue his further studies. He hears about two daughters of the merchant, Baptista. When he sees his beautiful little daughter, Bianca Minola, he decides to woo her. But Bianca already has two boys, Gremio and Hortensio, though she doesn't care for either of them. Bianca's father, Baptista Minola, says that Bianca cannot marry before her strong-willed older sister, Katharine.

Lucentio hears that merchant Baptista Minola is going to hire tutors for Bianca, and he disguises himself as a Latin tutor to woo her. The older Gremio hires a disguised Lucentio to woo Bianca on his behalf. Hortensio also disguises himself as a musician in order to gain access to her. Tranio, Lucentio's servant, dresses as Lucentio in order to persuade Baptista to let Lucentio marry Bianca.

Act II

At the same time, Petruchio, a young, self-confident man from Verona, arrives to visit his friend Hortensio. He learns of Katherine and resolves to court her, helped by both Gremio and Hortensio. Baptista is excited about Petruchio's suit because Katherine is a burden to him. She constantly quarrels with her sister and father. Though she is resistant to Petruchio's advances, he won't be deterred and sets the date of their wedding.

Act III

While everyone is preparing for the wedding ceremony, disguised tutors Hortensio and Lucentio compete with each other for Bianca's affection. The next day at church, Katherine is reluctantly waiting for her groom. Finally, Petruchio arrives late, dressed strangely, and he causes a scene there. After the ceremony, he immediately leaves for Verona along with his new wife.

Act IV

Upon arrival at her new home, Katherine is mistreated by Petruchio and his servants and even refuses food and rest. Petruchio's main aim is to 'enslave' Katherine while pretending to act out of the desire for her benefit. Eventually, annoyed by her husband's behaviour, Katerina accepts and agrees with all of her husband's whims. In return, she is allowed to visit her father in Padua. On the journey, the couple meets Lucentio's wealthy father, Vincentio. Petruchio examines Kate's obedience, asking her to say that the sun is the moon and that an old man is a beautiful maiden.

Act V

All three eventually reached Padua. Hortensio, after being rejected by Bianca, has already married a wealthy widow.  They also find that Tranio, still dressed as Lucentio, has succeeded in convincing Baptista to let Lucentio marry Bianca. A pedant (school teacher) poses as Vincentio, Lucentio's father, to give his blessing for the match. Meanwhile, the real Lucentio has arranged a secret wedding with Bianca, which they officiate. When the actual Vincentio arrives there and discovers a pedant posing as him and Tranio in his son's clothes, Lucentio is forced to confess to the entire scheme. He tells them about his new marriage to Bianca.

Undismayed, merchant Baptista holds a wedding feast for his two daughters. As the men rest after their meal, Petruchio designs a plan to prove whose wife is the most obedient. Bianca and the widow fail to come to their husbands when they are called. But Katherine immediately returns and firmly admonishes the women about the proper duties of a wife.

The visiting players leave back in the real world. Christopher Sly is left to sleep his dreams of subduing a wily wife.
