DETAILED SUMMARY

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Act I

The play "Romeo and Juliet" begins as the chorus introduces the two feudal families of Verona: the Capulets and the Montagues. On a hot summer's day, the youths of each faction fight until the Prince of Verona intervenes and threatens to banish them. Soon after, the Capulet family's head plans a feast for all. His main goal is to introduce his daughter Juliet to a count named Paris who wants to marry Juliet.

Montague's son Romeo and his friends (Benvolio and Mercutio) hear about the party and resolve to go there in disguise. Romeo hopes to see his sweetheart, Rosaline, at the party. Instead, while being there, he happens to meet Juliet and immediately falls in love with her. Juliet's cousin Tybalt knows about the Montagues and even recognises the boys. He forces them to leave the party just as Romeo and Juliet discover one another.

Act II

Romeo stops by the Capulet house to talk to Juliet when she appears at her window. The pair express their love for each other and intend to marry the next day. With the help of Juliet's nurse, the lovers arrange to be married when Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence's cell for confession. There, they secretly get married (talk about a short engagement).

Act III

After the secret marriage, Juliet's cousin Tybalt sends a challenge to Romeo. Romeo refuses to fight, angering his friend Mercutio, who then fights Tybalt. Mercutio is accidentally killed there as Romeo intervenes to stop the fight. Enraged, Romeo pursues Tybalt, kills him, and is banished by the Prince.

Juliet is worried when Romeo is late to meet her and learns of the dispute, Tybalt's death, and Romeo's banishment. Friar Laurence helps to arrange for Romeo to spend the night with Juliet before he leaves for Mantua. Meanwhile, the Capulet family grieves over Tybalt's death, so Lord Capulet moves Juliet's wedding to Paris the next day. When Juliet does not want to marry Paris, Juliet's parents get angry, but they do not know about her secret marriage to Romeo.

Act IV

Friar Laurence helps Juliet by providing her with a sleeping draft that will make her appear dead. The next day, when the wedding party arrives to greet Juliet, they all believe she is dead. The friar sends a messenger to warn Romeo of Juliet's fake plan and bids him to come to the Capulet family monument to rescue his sleeping wife.

Act V

The important message to Romeo does not reach him in time because the plague is in the city (so the messenger cannot leave Verona to deliver the message). Romeo hears about Juliet's death from his servant and becomes so sad. Later, he buys poison from an apothecary in Mantua. He returns to Verona and moves to the tomb, where he surprises and kills the grieving Paris. He drinks his poison and dies. Later, Juliet awakens from her drugged coma. When she learns what has happened to Friar Laurence, she refuses to leave the tomb and stabs herself. The friar returns along with the prince, the capulets, and Romeo's recently widowed father. The deaths of their children prompt the families to make peace, and they promise to erect a monument in memory of Romeo and Juliet.
