DETAILED SUMMARY

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Act I

The play "Much Ado About Nothing" begins in Messina, where Leonato lives with his daughter, Hero, and her cousin and companion, Lady Beatrice. Leonato receives news that his friend, Duke Don Pedro, has returned from war and plans to travel with some of his fellow soldiers. At the party is Claudio, who quickly falls in love with Hero. Benedick, a bachelor who has sworn off love and marriage, also arrives and enjoys speaking his mind in a witty argument with Beatrice.

Act II

Leonato holds a masked ball with him to celebrate the end of the war. While at the ball, Claudio and Hero's engagement is arranged. At the same time, Don John or Don Pedro's brother finds a way to spoil the general happiness (simply because he is bitter and petty). Don John tricks Claudio and the soldiers, Borachio and Conrad, into believing that Hero has betrayed him.

Act III

That particular night, Hero's maid, Margaret, talks to Borachio through Hero's bedroom window. Both Claudio and the Duke sneak on from afar and think the girl at the window is Hero. Meanwhile, Hero, Claudius, and Don Pedro make the decision that Benedick and Beatrice are ideal partners, despite (or because of) their bickering. They make a plot to permit Benedick to overhear them discussing the love of Beatrice for him and vice versa. After a series of overheard conversations, Benedikt and Beatrice realise they truly love each other.

Act IV

At Hero's wedding ceremony, Claudio is still reeling, thinking that Hero betrayed him. He denounces her and leaves her, apparently dead of shock. With the priest's help, Leonato, Beatrice, and Benedick decide to pretend that Hero is in fact dead until her name is cleared. Later, the bubbling village watchmen, managed by Constable Dogberry, overhear Borachio and Conrad bragging about the trick they played on Claudio and Don Pedro. They arrest the couple.

Act V

Dogberry's incriminating information is, after some difficulty, passed on to Leonato and Don Pedro. As penance for causing the hero's death, Claudio agrees to accept Leonato's "niece" in her stead. The "niece" turned out to be a hero (easily). The play reaches a happy conclusion as the lovers are reunited and Benedick and Beatrice declare that they will share the wedding day. Don John is captured while trying to escape and is released for future trial, while the play ends with a merry dance.
