The Jar by Luigi Pirandello

MAIN SUMMARY

The Jar by Luigi Pirandello

This humorous story "The Jar" has been written by Sicilian writer Luigi Pirandello. This story is quite humorous and presents the account of the comic plight of a riveter, Zi Dima. This story is about a selfish and arrogant farmer, Lollo Zirafa, who has created the comic plight for Zi Dima. Lollo Zirafa was a quite rich and rude farmer who lived at Primosole. He was quite doubtful and moody. He used to sue in court for minor reasons. He had quite a big olive crop. Once, he got plenty of olives from his crops. He ordered a big jar so that he could properly store olives. The ordered big jar was completed as well as brought from the potter. It was a too-big jar; that’s why it was placed outside in the shed. Lollo became quite content with that jar. During the harvest of olives, he kept an eye on the workers, whether they were working accurately or not. After three days, when the olives were gathered completely, three workers went to the shed to replace the ladder and the poles of the jar. But when they inspected the jar, they found the jar broken into two parts. They became too afraid to see the condition of the jar.

Among them, one of the workers wanted to keep the news of the jar secret, but other workers thought it would be good to inform Lollo.

When Lollo learned about that, he became quite angry with the workers. He became quite doubtful and pondered who broke the jar and why. He was quite sure that the jar was alright when it was brought from the potter.

He even suspected his workers. After some time, when he became calm, some of the workers asked him to call a riveter (fixer) called Zi Dima to repair that big jar. The workers even suggested to Lollo the new cement invented by Zi Dima. According to the workers, Zi Dima’s cement could join any breaks.

Eventually, Zi Dima was called to fix the broken jar in Primosole. Zi Dima came to Primosole along with his cement and other instruments. As an old guy, he was quite worried about the facts behind his cement. He didn’t want anybody to know about his cement and its formula. While he was at his work of fixing, he didn’t allow anyone to come near and see that. He even prohibited Lollo from looking at his cement. He told Lollo to see the result only.

At first, he examined the broken jar and came to the conclusion that he would easily fix that jar with his cement. Lollo became suspicious about Dima’s cement and even asked Dimma to use rivets as well.

Dima started his task. He made various holes on the edge of the broken jar. He also made sized rivets with his pliers. He took out his cement from the box with the help of his assistant. He fixed the cement from the outer part and went inside the jar along with pliers, rivets, and cement. He ordered his assistant to fit the broken part from outside. The assistant pushed the parts closer. Dima used his pliers to twist the rivets of the holes from inside. It almost took an hour to twist all the rivets in the holes from inside. When he finished all his tasks, he tried to come out through the neck of the jar, but he couldn’t. When the broken jar was fixed, the neck of the jar also became narrow. When Lollo came there, he was amazed to see Dima trapped inside the jar. He didn’t get an idea about the next step, so he provided Dima with five liras for his task and also some foodstuffs. He moved to the lawyer to ask about that case.

When the lawyer heard the case, he couldn’t help laughing. The lawyer suggested that Zi Dima should be released and even fined for Lollo’s loss. When Lollo related the lawyer’s words to Zi Dima, Dima refused to pay up. He preferred to rot inside instead of paying. Zi Dima became quite tired inside the jar. He planned to have a feast inside the jar. So, he ordered his assistant to buy the necessary goods.

They started drinking along with singing and dancing. Their noise made Lollo awake. He couldn’t tolerate their noise. He kicked the jar, furious. The jar rolled down and hit the olive tree. Zi Dima was released and even won the case in court. He didn’t have to pay for Jar’s compensation.
