The Day of Dead by Octavio Paz
MAIN SUMMARY
The Day of Dead by Octavio Paz
This essay, “The Day of the Dead” has been written by Octavio Paz. This essay is about the Mexican people and their festivals. This essay has given an account of Mexicans' different festivals and their activities, no matter how rich or poor they are.
Mexican people celebrate many festivals throughout the year. According to them, these festivals are called fiestas. Mexicans are said to be lonely people. They spend their lives in solitude, being repressed and bored. So, they like fiestas much.
Through these fiestas, they can get a chance to be a part of social gatherings. They enjoy fiestas, forgetting their past mistakes and even upcoming days. For them, these fiestas are the means of their celebration. Here, they are not bound by societal rules and regulations. Thus, these lonely Mexicans love fiestas very much.
They shout in the crowd, enjoy every second, reveal their inner desires to others so frankly, forget their past follies, etc.
While enjoying themselves, they celebrate their fiestas in such a way that they suppose the particular celebration day is the day of the dead. They only concentrate on the enjoyment without caring about the expenses.
Mexicans are poor people but rich in rituals. They can’t manage parties or theatres to entertain them. The only way to enjoy them is to celebrate fiestas. During the celebration, all people have feelings of equality. All people behave like commoners. Whatever they have earned, they expense through enjoyment. They worship different gods and patron saints and make various offerings and sacrifices. The fiestas are taken as a symbol of rebirth after death. During fiestas, they think of their lives as a new rebirth. Their boring and lonely life has been transfigured through fiestas. They don’t hesitate to incur expenses because they suppose that spending money is the beginning of earning money. For them, being moneyless means the beginning of earning. There is no bias or hierarchy among the Mexican people.
Fiestas are taken as a kind of revolution. People feel quite light after expressing their hidden desires to others. They can express whatever they like. They can have sex if the next party feels okay. Most of the time, the fight takes place between people. But their happiness sometimes brings very bad results. Their fight sometimes ends in a quarrel and sometimes in death. Therefore, their fiestas are taken as an example of self-expression, freedom, and enjoyment.
