A Day in the Life of Salaryman by John John Burgess
This essay, 'A Day in the Life of a 'Salaryman', has been written by John Burgess. This essay is about a day’s description of a Japanese worker in his company. It is about an average male Japanese white-collar worker who devotes his soul and life to developing his company.
The writer talks about a white-collar Japanese worker and also his day’s activities from morning to late evening. The writer addresses the worker as ‘He’. According to the writer, he is a university graduate, lives in a mortgaged house with a wife and two children, always wears a formal dress, and always has every essential item. He is an industrial warrior and also a driving force behind Japan’s economic success. Around 280,000 salarymen graduate from the university every year. After their education, they want to have a good salary, or they want to be a good salaryman. The salaryman is a section officer and gives more value to his company or office than his own family.
In the morning, he wakes up late. After a quick wash, shave, and dressing, he takes his breakfast. His wife drives him to the train station within a 10-minute ride. After that, he catches a train and starts reading a computer book to improve his computer skills. He reaches the office at 9:10 a.m. At 10:30 am, he assembles data and attends a meeting about a contract. He works determinedly to get a promotion. At 4:00 pm, he attends another meeting, and by 7:00 pm, he finishes his assembling work. After that, he doesn’t go home but attends a dinner with the company’s client. Around 11:00 pm, his friends rush towards the bathhouse for entertainment, but he rushes towards his house. At home, he takes late supper left on the table, gives a sentimental gaze at his sleeping children, and goes to his bed.
Thus, for the salaryman, the office is his real home.
WHITE COLLAR SALARYMAN
A salaryman is an average white-collar worker in Japanese companies. His position is sales officer in the sales division office. He is quite a hardworking, honest, sincere, dedicated, and punctual worker who heartily works for the progress of his company. He is called an industrial warrior who plays a vital role in the economic success of Japan. He gives more priority to his company or office than to his wife or kids. He always works so hard, expecting the bright future of his company and his own. He expects to get a promotion through his dedication to his work. According to the writer, around 2,80,000 salarymen graduate from the university every year. They want to involve themselves in a fine-working position with a good salary. The lifestyle of salarymen isn’t liked much by those who are living a simple lifestyle. The writer has presented an account of a salaryman’s whole-day activities from morning to late evening. Following are the activities that occur on a salaryman's day of the salaryman:
Salaryman gets up late in the morning. His wife has already sent the kids to school before he gets up. He quickly washes, shaves, and wears his formal white-collar dress. He lights up his cigarette and takes his breakfast.
After breakfast, he talks about buying a car called the Toyota Crown. But his wife rejects his proposal, saying that it is too expensive to buy a crown for a middle-class worker like him. His wife takes him to the train station within ten minutes. It takes him seventy minutes to reach his office by train. In the crowded train, he reads a book related to computers because knowledge of computers is very essential for a white-collar worker.
At 9:10 AM, he reaches his office and involves himself in collecting and assembling different data and reports that are sent by the field workers or his assistants.
By 10:30 AM, he attends his meeting and presents different reports. He presents his ideas related to sales to get a contract from the clients. After the end of the meeting, he gets some ideas from his manager in the sales department.
He takes his lunch and gets ready to attend the next meeting at 4:30 p.m. He takes meetings as a member of the sales department. He doesn't have to present any data or reports. He attends the meeting to get ideas.
At 7 PM, he goes to a bar or restaurant with the clients to provide them with entertainment so that he can easily get a contract. His friends join another bar, but he moves towards his home.
At 11 p.m., he reaches his home. He eats the cold supper left on the table. He watches television while eating. He takes a hot shower and looks at his kids sleeping, being sentimental.
